There was a General Election in 1918. All those away from their place of residence (so including all men in the army) were listed on Absent Voters Lists. These usually recorded the man's regiment, number and rank at the time, as well as his home address. It is therefore an invaluable source for surviving 'other ranks', for whom there are very few alternative sources. These Absent Voter Lists continued right up to 1939, and Birmingham is one of the very few places where these lists have survived.
