Bentley's Directory of Worcestershire (1840-1842)
Bentley's Directory of Worcestershire (1840-1842)

Here we have all seven volumes covering Worcestershire on one CD (Bromsgrove, Evesham, Dudley, Stourbridge, Kidderminster, Worcester & the volume for the County). The volumes were published between 1840 and 1842, and issued separately to subscribers. The volumes contain thousands of names, addresses, trades & occupations, and a comprehensive description of every place in the county and its history. Bear in mind that directories such as this do not include just businesses, but anyone with a trade. So that includes normal people such as gardeners, dress makers, chimney sweeps, and so on. In addition, we have a large hand coloured full county map of Worcestershire of 1840 - and also superbly detailed street maps of Dudley and Worcester - a great rarity in old directories, as the maps have usually been removed. That's not all. There are dozens of pages of the most delightful trade advertisements, beautifully and finely engraved. Kindly loaned to the project by Dudley Archives & Local History Service.

It includes a street directory for Birmingham (and town & village directory for Worcestershire and Staffordshire), a Court Directory, and both alphabetic and classified trades directories for the whole area. Particularly valuable, as it not only covers Birmingham but also the suburbs to the North, East and West of the City, which is where the main manufacturing activity was located. Slater's Directory of Worcestershire (1850)
Slater's Directory of Worcestershire (1850)

Slater appears to have taken over the business - or at least part of the business - of Pigot & Co., who up to this point had published a series of well known directories for the counties of England. This follows in much the same format as earlier Pigot directories, listing the Gentry, Nobility, Clergy & traders of Worcestershire in 1850. Included is a county map of Worcestershire. An excellent resource. Kindly loaned to the project by Dudley Archives & Local History Service.

Slater's classified Directory of the Manufacturing District (c. 1853)
Slater's classified Directory of the Manufacturing District (c. 1853)

Precisely when this directory was compiled is not clear, but it has been tentatively dated to 1853. Slater was an agent of Pigot, and appears to have taken over Pigot's business by this time, and the style and content of this directory reflects that. It covers the area around Birmingham - including the Potteries - without actually covering Birmingham itself. A very useful directory for the period. Kindly loaned to the project by Stourbridge Library.
