Following our release of a number of Birmingham Electoral Rolls in January, we are now releasing some earlier electoral rolls with an index. Some of these cover the North Warwickshire area, which includes areas like Coventry, Nuneaton, Atherstone, Solihull and so on. In addition, all of them also include Birmingham and Aston. The additions are as follows:-
In addition, we have added an index for the Birmingham Burgess Roll, 1868, to the electoral roll database. Previously, this Burgess Roll was listed under "Directories".
2. Revisions to electoral roll search
Following the successful release of 20th century Birmingham Electoral rolls last month, our web site was inundated with visitors. In fact, so many of you used the electoral roll search in the first 24 hours that searches started to "time out". As soon as it became clear that this was happening, I redesigned the search to improve performance, and this now seems to be working well.
One side effect of this redesign is that the "Address" field is now used for other information as well, and has been retitled "Address/Other". This will help military historians wishing to search the 1918 Absent Voters list by regiment, as they can now put the name of the appropriate regiment into the "Address/Other" box in the electoral roll search. One caution, however - the original list abbreviates the regiment, and the authors did not use standard abbreviations. This means that The Royal Warwickshire Regiment variously appears as "RWR", "R Warks Reg.", Royal Warwicks", and so on. I am considering how best to assist those military historians who want to make these searches.
