1. Birmingham Electoral Roll

Access to old Electoral Rolls is very limited on the internet. That is why we are delighted to be releasing today the Birmingham Electoral Roll for the following years:-

We have indexed all of these electoral rolls, and you can search the index (of 2.5m records) from our web site. From the search results you can link directly to an image of the page of the Electoral Roll.

The search allows people to be found by surname, firstname or address. You can also locate two people with different names living at the same address (which is very useful if, like me, you are looking for ancestors with common surnames e.g Smith, Jones, Johnson, etc.).

The 1918 Absent Voters list will be of particular interest for those researching First World War servicemen. The list records about 73,000 Absent Voters for the in October 1918. Of course, the majority were servicemen still on active service. The list records their address, and in most cases their service number, rank and regiment (although you will need to be able to translate the abbreviations used). As far as we are aware there are very few other records of this type for surviving "other ranks", although of course the Army List records officers.

The Electoral Roll is only available on a pay-per-view basis. Prices for this service are unchanged. Each search will be charged at 1 page credit, and each page view is charged at 1 page credit. As at present, the pay-per-view service is free if you are viewing from libraries participating in this project (which at present includes Birmingham, Dudley, Warwickshire and Wolverhampton).

2. New look for web site

We have redesigned the web site using "tabs" which we hope will make site navigation much easier. We have also improved the search results page to give you more options for sorting and sifting results.

3. Conclusion

It is some time since we released our last newsletter. It is not because we have been doing nothing - far from it. It is because we believe it is best to avoid you with unnecessary Email, and only contact you when we have something of substance to annouce. We shall continue with that policy.
