1. New FHS Indexes

We have been working for the last two years with two local Family History Societies helping them to produce indexes, and we are delighted to release these now.

(i) Warwick Cemetery - collaboration with BMSGH
Firstly, we have been working with the BMSGH in scanning around 25,000 documents covering 15,000 burials between 1859 and 1968 at Warwick Cemetery. These are stored in 59 A4 loose leaf binders, and are currently inaccessible. They contain the administrative details necessary for a burial to proceed at the cemetery. On many of the slips, personal notes on the deceased are recorded. On the earlier slips, these sometimes include the circumstances in which a death occurred, particularly if the circumstances were out of the ordinary. Throughout, if there is any supporting correspondence or other notes, these are included. From 1923 onwards, the slips are accompanied by certificates of disposal, sometimes issued by the Coroners Office.

BMSGH volunteers have created a forename and surname index for these burial slips. The index can be searched from our web-site, and from the search results links are provided direct to images of the burial slips, which you can view on-line as long as you have adequate voucher credits or an on-line subscription.

(ii) Warwickshire Poor Law - collaboration with Coventry FHS
Secondly, we have been working with the Coventry Family History Society in scanning the transcription of extracts from Poor Law which a member of the society, Barbara Robinson, has compiled over a period of 13 years. The transcriptions are in the form of handwritten sheets, and record key details extracted from the Poor Law records held in various archives in the Midlands. The details recorded in the transcriptions include the names of all the people involved, and the action recorded. The original records from which the details are extracted are Settlement Certificates, Removal certificates, Bastardy bonds and Apprenticeship Indentures. The majority of the original documents are held in archives in Warwickshire, but there are a substantial number of "strays" from other counties.

Coventry FHS volunteers have produced a surname index for these transcriptions, and this includes some 37,000 names. This index can also be searched from the web-site, and links are also provided so that you can view the transcriptions.

Although you cannot view the original documents you can view the transcriptions which contain all the key details from the web-site. This therefore provides an excellent on-line index to Warwickshire Poor Law records - which include Birmingham. Please note that access to this index is free, and the transcriptions can be viewed free of charge from participating libraries. This includes the Warwick County Record Office where many of the original records are stored. From other locations the transcriptions can be viewed on a pay-per-view basis. We hope that this will improve access to these valuable archives.

We are delighted to be releasing the results of these two collaborations.
