Warwickshire Poor Law Index

This index was created by members of the Coventry Family History Society over a period of 13 years, and is stored in 12 binders (see right).

The main work was undertaken by Barbara Robinson, who has painstakingly extracted all references to people she can find in the Poor Law Records deposited in the Warwick County Record Office and in other repositories around the county. The abstracts are recorded on handwritten sheets, and contain references to around 35,000 people.

Recently, other volunteers from the Society have created a surname index to these abstracts, and this is the basis of the index available on this web-site. To assist the indexing process, we scanned the handwritten abstracts, and these scans are available to view on the site as images.

As far as we know, this is the only surname index to the Poor Law records in Warwickshire. It is therefore a very useful addition to the tools available to local and family historians researching this in this county.

Contents of the transcriptions
This index contains the most complete listing of such Parish Poor Law Records for Warwickshire. The transcriptions are organised by Parish, reflecting the original Ecclesiastical administration of the Poor Law. The Parishes will be found in alphabetical order, and within that the individual entries for each type of record are given in date order. A more complete explanation of the information contained in each type of record is summarised within each volume, but briefly, within each parish may be found :-
  • Apprenticeship Indentures
  • Bastardy Orders
  • Removal Orders from, and Removal Orders to, (the parish)
  • Settlement Certificates and Settlement Examinations

Each transcription contains all the information from the original certificate, including names, dates, names of parishes, family, employers, masters, plus the accession number of the bundle of certificates and the name of the place of deposit. It is indeed a valuable resource. See a sample transcription.
