A Handbook of Birmingham (1886)
A Handbook of Birmingham (1886)

This handbook appears to have been compiled as a guide of the city for an annual meeting of the British Association held in Birmingham in 1886. The British Association was a scientific society, and the contents of the handbook reflect this. After a very thorough description of Birmingham and its public and private institutions, there follows sections on the Geology, Zoology and Botany of the area. Kindly loaned to the project by the Birmingham and Midland Institute.

The Making of Birmingham, Robert K Dent (1894)
The Making of Birmingham, Robert K Dent (1894)

This is Robert Dent's second history of Birmingham. It is even better illustrated than the first (Old & New Birmingham - see above), and contains quite a lot of new material. In Dent's own words "During the fifteen years which have elapsed since the completion of the former work I have devoted my leisure hours to further research in the fascinating subject of the early history of our town, in which I have had the pleasure and advantage of being allied with some of the most devoted students of local archaeology. From the materials accumulated during this period I trust I have been able to present a fuller picture of the life and growth of the town; while the experience of the past has prevented undue proportion being given to some less important phases of old Birmingham life." Memorials of the Old Square, Birmingham (1897)
Memorials of the Old Square, Birmingham (1897)

A record by two notable local historians on the passing of the Old Square in Birmingham, which was demolished as part of the development of Corporation Street (nothing ever changes !). The Old Square had been one of the more genteel and well-to-do squares, and contained many fine Georgian and Queen Anne buildings, many of which appear in photographs in this book. The book records the inhabitants of the Square - so if your ancestors lived in the Old square then this may contain some gems for you. To help you find out, we have included the index to the book, for which follow the link. Kindly loaned to the project by BMSGH.

William Sands Cox and the Birmingham Medical School, 1926
William Sands Cox and the Birmingham Medical School, 1926

The origin of this work is the following minute of the Medical Committee of Queen's Hospital, dated the 23rd June, 1925 :

Seeing that the University is about to celebrate the Centenary of the Birmingham Medical School, the Medical Committee feel that they would like to share in the celebration by publishing an account of the life and work of Sands Cox, F.R.S., F.R.C.S., Founder of the Medical School and of the Queen"s Hospital .........

This is therefore a Centenary volume. It deals with the life-time of William Sands Cox, and the first hundred years of the famous Medical School of which he was the sole founder and tireless builder.
