Toulmin Smith wrote his "Men & Names - Memorials of Old Birmingham" in 1864. His method was straightforward, but thorough and based on evidence he found in old documents, many of which were at that time still in private hands. The old documents were indentures, leases, wills, agrements and so on. From these he extracted the names of several of the city's "Founders, Freeholders and Indwellers from the 13th to the 16th Century" as he put it. He also recorded what he could about these early residents of Birmingham. It is a fascinating insight into the early development of the city of Birmingham.
